Major Data Center Investment in Maharashtra

Singapore-based ST Telemedia has reportedly committed to a substantial expansion of its data center operations in Maharashtra, India, according to recent announcements. Sources indicate the company‘s Global Data Centre (STT GDC) India division will invest up to INR 5,000 crore ($570 million) to develop and enhance data center infrastructure across the state.

Expansion Across Key Locations

The investment will focus on expanding existing data center parks in Mumbai and Pune, while also supporting development of a new 27-acre campus in Palava, an urban township near Mumbai. Analysts suggest this expansion aligns with India’s growing digital economy demands and increasing data consumption patterns.

STT GDC currently operates two data center parks in the Mumbai region, according to the company‘s portfolio details. One facility is located in Mumbai proper, while another operates in Navi Mumbai, where two additional facilities reportedly began construction in November 2024. The Pune campus currently consists of five facilities offering up to 140MW of capacity.

Partnership with Maharashtra Government

The memorandum of understanding was signed between ST Telemedia and the Government of Maharashtra on October 16, though the report states that specific development timelines weren’t disclosed. Industry observers note that MoUs typically represent expressions of intent rather than legally binding commitments, but signal strong partnership potential.

STT GDC’s Growing Indian Presence

STT GDC’s India operations reportedly encompass more than 400MW of critical IT load across 30 facilities in 10 Indian cities, according to company statistics. The business maintains a minority stake held by Tata Communications, part of the prominent Indian conglomerate Tata Group.

This Maharashtra initiative follows STT GDC’s previous agreement with the Uttar Pradesh government for an “AI City” development signed last December, suggesting a strategic expansion pattern across multiple Indian states.

Global Data Center Portfolio

Beyond India, STT GDC operates or is developing data centers across numerous international markets including Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, the United Kingdom, Germany, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Italy. The company’s global portfolio reportedly totals more than 95 data centers with approximately 1.7GW of capacity across 11 geographic regions.

Industry analysts suggest this continued investment in Indian data infrastructure reflects the country’s position as one of the world’s fastest-growing digital economies, with increasing demand for cloud services, data storage, and digital connectivity solutions.
