“It’s an indication if it’s 50 or 60 references to the word ‘fostering,’ for example, that it may have been generated by artificial intelligence,” Koenig explained. “It’s not to say that’s cheating, and it’s not to say that’s plagiarism because people use that word – but that seems to be a popular word with ChatGPT.”

Dr Ruth McKie, senior lecturer in criminology, described testing such systems with known human-written work, including a friend’s PhD thesis that was incorrectly flagged as “100% AI” despite containing no AI-generated content.
Koenig noted this unreliability is why the technology isn’t widely used by lecturers. “It’s as damaging to a student to falsely accuse them as it is to accurately say that they have committed plagiarism,” he explained, a concern that echoes market trends in educational accountability measures.
